Department of Arabic
Arabic is one of the five widely spoken languages of the world. It is official language of 22 countries with 310 million native speakers, and one of the six official languages of the United Nation. 18th December was declared as World Arabic Language Day by UNESCO. So,since 2012 it is observed as World Arabic Language Day all over the world.Arabic language enjoys strategic importance in the world apart from being liturgical language of around 1.8 billion Muslims.India has been one of the most well-known non-Arab states where Arabic language grew and developed through the different periods. West Bengal is one of the important states where Arabic is widely taught in schools, colleges and universities.
In HBC, The Department of Arabic was established in 2013. Over the years, it gained popularity and grew up to become one of the important departments of the college. It attracts a good number of students every year.
The Department offers three year (6 Semesters) B.A. (General) program in Arabic which covers Arabic language, literature and brief modern history of Arabic speaking countries. The salient feature of the courses is a comprehensive and intensive training in Arabic language touching upon literature, translation and an insight into literary and cultural heritage of the Arab World. Furthermore, the Department encourages its students to participate in academic and cultural programs of the Department/college.
The Arabic Department has started an online Arabic Quarterly Peer-reviewed International Journal to promote the Arabic language and give an exposure to the students of Arabic to the scholarly peer-reviewed articles in Arabic which can be accessed through www.hilalalhind.com.
