Department of Arabic
Arabic stands as one of the world's five most widely spoken languages, with official status in 22 countries and a staggering 310 million native speakers. Additionally, it holds the distinction of being one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Since 2012, December 18th has been designated by UNESCO as World Arabic Language Day, a celebration of its cultural richness and global significance. Beyond its linguistic prominence, Arabic holds profound cultural and religious significance as the liturgical language for approximately 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide.
India, renowned for its cultural diversity, has served as a notable hub for the growth and development of the Arabic language, particularly in states like West Bengal, where Arabic is widely integrated into educational curricula from schools to universities.
Established in 2013, the Department of Arabic at HBC has swiftly risen to prominence, drawing a substantial number of students each year and becoming an indispensable part of the college's academic fabric.
The department offers a comprehensive three-year (six-semester) B.A. (General) programme in Arabic, encompassing language studies, literary exploration, and an overview of the modern history of Arabic-speaking nations. Noteworthy features of the curriculum include rigorous training in Arabic language, literature, and translation, as well as insights into the rich literary and cultural heritage of the Arab world. Moreover, the department actively fosters student engagement in academic and cultural activities within the college and beyond.
In pursuit of its mission, the Arabic Department has initiated an online Arabic Bi-annual Peer-reviewed International Journal, aimed at promoting the Arabic language and providing students with exposure to scholarly peer-reviewed articles in Arabic.
